This piece brings together two views: the setting sun over Puget Sound in front of me, and the OK Hotel in Seattle behind me. The composition reduces both experiences to simple geometric forms. The circle and rectangular opening suggest the sun framed by the city’s buildings as it rises and sets, while also recalling the familiar gesture of sliding a vinyl record from its sleeve.
The OK Hotel was a cornerstone of Seattle’s punk and grunge scene in the 1980s and 1990s, and famously hosted Nirvana’s first live performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Through shape, light, and movement, the work connects landscape, architecture, and memory, reflecting on the relationship between place and the experiences that give it meaning.
